Lessons from Charlie Sheen Can Too Much Honesty Hurt Your Personal Brand - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career If you follow celebrity news or social media and even if you donât youâve likely heard about Charlie Sheenâs recent rants pertaining to the cancellation of his hit show, âTwo and a Half Men,â on CBS after production was stopped due to his erratic behavior and alleged drug problem. Sheen participated in several interviews on major television news outlets including ABC and NBC presumably to share his side of the story and, in essence, hoping to scare CBS officials into reconsidering the cancellation of his show. However, his honesty seems to be hurting his brand much more than helping his case. Can too much honesty hurt your personal brand? Although honesty is something that people want in todayâs world of immediate communication and transparency, it can definitely go too far. In recent interviews, Sheen talks about his drug use, his âgoddessesâ (or girlfriends), bashes CBS executives and their decisions, and overall, says a lot of things that are making people notice him for all of the wrong reasons. You may think, âYeah, but Charlie Sheen just broke the Guinness Record for gaining over 1 million Twitter followers in just one day!â How many of those followers are just waiting for another erratic meltdown or crazy phrase to latch onto? (Tiger blood, anyone?) There is definitely a ârightâ and a âwrongâ way to get into the public eyeâ"and itâs going to be hard to recover from this personal branding disaster unless he gets help quickly. Most addiction specialists recognize that Sheenâs public outbursts are a result of his long-lasting problem with drugs and alcohol: âWhether you are rehabilitating from an ankle injury or pneumonia, youâve got to take the time and youâve got to get out of the environments that impact adversely on the recovery process â" whether itâs a limb, an organ or the brain,â said Dr. Drew Pinsky of VH1's Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew. âWhile this may be a setback for Sheen, I still believe theres hope for his recovery,â said Deni Carise, Ph.D. and Chief Clinical Officer at the Phoenix House. âI have seen people in Sheens state or worse friends who have destroyed their careers and families, and even lost their freedom get well; the only difference is that Sheen is playing out his struggle in the public eye. His behavior is not evidence that he cant get better, but an indicator of just how badly he needs help.â Charlie Sheen has been given a platform that the average person in a manic state wouldnt have, says Jason Gold, PhD, a clinical psychologist at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute. He has access to the public and hes unraveling in front of millions of viewers.â Sheen definitely needs some help with both his personal brand and personal life if he wants to continue being a high-profile actor with a hit television series. Weâll see how the situation unfolds in the coming weeks. What are your suggestions for repairing Sheenâs personal brand? Will he be able to come back from this? Author: Heather R.
